Michael Oher

OLE MISS

OT

ohermichael150_10013
  * Detroit needs help everywhere and with two picks in the 1st Round they can focus on OHER here and take a top DT at pick 20. I know QB is the sexy pick but it starts in the trenches. OT is the safest pick and comes with an * that DET will be fixing the QB problem via Free Agency.
2 rams4

Eugene Monroe

VIRGINIA

OT

monroeeugene1502
  * The Rams were miserable on offense in 08. The defense wasn’t the greatest either but with Pace hurt every other game there is a definite need for one of the elite O-lineman in this year’s draft. MONROE is a beast and could play RT until Pace decides to retire. Other possibilities include Malcolm Jenkins and Aaron Curry.
3   chiefs2

Andre Smith

‘BAMA

OT

andresmith150_05282
  * Kansas City traded away Jared Allen and it showed in 08. No pass rush led to many bad defensive performances for KC. Thigpen played well so taking a QB here might be difficult for the new GM and with no high profile DE in this years draft I have KC taking a standout OT even though 2 have gone off the board already. SMITH should drastically improve the running game in KC.
4   seahawks2

Malcolm Jenkins

OHIO STATE

DB

malcolmjenkins150_08182
  * The Seahawks have no identity on offense and even with Matt Hasselback healthy he cannot do it all himself. Seattle needs a RB but most importantly a WR. Crabtree makes sense here but I went with JENKINS because Seattle also needs DB help and Malcolm can step in Day 1 and contribute. A WR can be found in the later rounds (maybe not as good as Crabtree but Jenkins could be the next Champ Bailey)
5  browns2

Aaron Curry

WAKE FOREST

LB

10682932
  * I have Cleveland taking Curry here because he is the #1 rated LB in this years draft. He can play inside or outside and can play in either a 3-4 or 4-3. These skills make him very special and Cleveland is in dire need of a pass rusher. CURRY fits the bill perfectly and should make an impression from day 1. Other possibilities include Maualuga or Crabtree.
6   bengals3

Rey Maualuga

USC

LB

12840902
  * The Bengals should have 1 goal for 2009 – Protect Carson Palmer. With the top 3 OT’s off the board it would be difficult for Cincy to take an OT here. (They will pray that a QB goes in the top 3) Since Curry is gone I have the Bengals taking MAUALUGA who I beleive is an absolute beast. He can play next to old teammate Rivers and cause complete chaos.
7   raiders2

Michael Crabtree

TEXAS TECH

WR

crabtree2
  * Oakland could go many ways with this pick and it makes sense to focus the attention to defense. But this is the Raiders we are talking about so they will take the high profile pick and this year that guy is CRABTREE.  WR is a need in Oakland so this pick is not a bad one as Crabbtree should rise to the ranks of elite WR’s (even if he is a Raider)
8   jags2

Jeremy Maclin

MISSOURI

WR

21905041
  * What a disappointing 2008 season. The Jags need their offense to stay healthy and they need David Garrard to play better. Garrard needs some help and cannot depend on MJD on every play. They have no big play WR and if MACLIN was brought in they could establish a down field threat they have been missing for years.
9   packers2

Brian Orakpo

TEXAS

DE

orakpo_brian_20051502
  * The Packers have the pieces on offense to make a big splash in 09 but they need to improve their defense. Both corners are getting old in GB and so Vontae Davis is a possibility here but I went with ORAKPO to shore up the DL unit and attempt to stop the run. Brian was a Sack master at Texas and should give this dead defense some CPR.
10   49ers2

Mark Sanchez

USC

QB

sanchez2
  * The 49ers need a franchise QB. Stafford is still available but SANCHEZ is the hometown hero and my #1 rated QB. He has the arm to be a franchise QB; he just lacks the experience/starts. Alex Smith might be shown the door due to his high salary and with the emergence of Shaun Hill SANCHEZ could sit for a year and take over the team in 2010.
11   bills2

Matt Stafford

GEORGIA

QB

fpzmenoxrdlrqcu_200806091731422
  * Buffalo needs a playmaker on offense and with Crabtree off the board I went with a QB here. STAFFORD has all the tools to excel in the NFL so if he falls outside of the Top 10 he will be to hard to pass up for Buffalo. The Bills have no threat at QB and need a franchise guy to command the offense.
12   broncos3

BJ Raji

 BOSTON     COLLEGE

DT

82561
  * The Bronco’s had an explosive offense in 08 but still trailed many of their games late. Defense was the biggest problem (even more so than using 7 or 8 RB’s) Plugging up the middle has been a problem for the Denver defense for years and they need a run stuffer desperately. RAJI is my DT off the board and I think he deserves it. The DT class isn’t the strongest this year but he is a stud and should showcase that at the Combine.
13   redskins2

Jason Smith

BAYLOR

OT

21077722
  * Washington fell apart towards the end of 08 and while many people are pointing the finger at the offense I think the whole team just packed it in early. The Redskin running game is solid due largely in part to the stellar OL but that OL is getting old. SMITH would be a value and depth pick here at #13. He could start from day 1 and could push a veteran to the bench.
14

  saints2

Vontae Davis

ILLINOIS

DB

davis-vontae_0862
  * The Saints had a QB throw for 5000 yards, they find a RB in P. Thomas and still they are unable to stop anyone on defense. The Saints need a shut down corner on their defense and DAVIS should be a stud at the next level. If he falls this far the Saints fans should be very happy as there is talk of him overtaking Jenkins at #1 DB by the Combine.
15   texans2

Aaron Maybin

PENN STATE

DE

maybin
  * Houston needs some help on defense and MAYBIN can be the explosive player they need to generate sacks. He is very quick but he is also very raw so this could very much so be a developmental pick depending on how Houston would use him. Regardless the defense needs a boost so the best Defensive player available should be taken here.

21 Responses to “MOCK DRAFT (January 16th, 2009)”

  1. Hey this is the first mock draft I have seen that would have the Lions picking an ot. I can understand why you would have them picking an OT but not unless you have them pick up Sanchez or trade for a Qb they wont draft an OT with their first pick. Just my 2c

    http://www.heavenhasfallen.com

  2. Nice mock draft. Do you think Bradford is a better QB than Stafford, or just that he will get drafted first?

BTW I linked to your blog from my site.

  3. I love this draft this is coming from a very frustrated Lions fan if they follow this formula Two great o-line people is this o-line heavy class and follow up in the 2nd round with the gut from LSU they would be good on that side of the ball for ten years

  4. Jared Helenic Says:

Ahhh it is reliving for finally somebody to think Detriot goes line with their 2 picks. Qb is obviulsy a need. But even if u put the skills of Tom Brady and Peyton Mannings in one person he would still be a crappy Qb. Cuz that o-line is just awful. I am a New Enlgand Patriots fan. I am also no band waggin kind of guy. I have been pats fan for all of my life, and i think the only way to get a team off the ground is via the line. I am also happy you said that the pats would take a Db with this pick. I would concur with this choice. I would think this may be the best 1st round mock i have seen ever. Thats sayin something cuz i have seen easily ova 100 mocks. The only pick i don’t get is Seattles. But otha than that i think it is great.

  5. Meltodd McKiper Says:

I don’t want to rip you to bad but this mock is way off. I know Lions fans are scared to draft a QB(like my Chiefs) but NFL is copycat league. Flacco and Ryan had huge years so bad teams like the Lions(and my Chiefs) will look hard at the underclassmen QBs coming out. With a new GM the Lions will absolutely look at a Qb at #1. If Bradford and Sanchez come out and join Stafford they might gamble that 1 of the 3 drops to 20. I’m betting they grab an OL-man at 20. If Bradford or Stafford is on the board they doesn’t make it past the Chiefs. So with the Qbs going to low in your mock, it throws off the rest. No WR is worth the #4 pick this year, and I love Crabtree. I will fall over if Spikes goes before Rey M. of USC. Beanie wells won’t be the 1st running back taken because of injury concerns same for Percy Harvin who drops to top half of round 2. Generally I think RBs and WRs are starting to lose their appeal in round 1, because the general feeling is that you can get productive guys in the later rounds. A couple of workout DEnds like Selvie out of USF and Johnson out of GTech will crack the 1st pushing out some talented RBS and WRs.

  6. Cody would be interesting…Singletary plans to continue w/3-4 defense and you need a dominant NT for it. Still, he may have some concerns about Cody’s weight. Other possibilities are DT B.J. Raji, who’s not as big, but a superior player. Could also go best OT on the board…Coach knows he’s got to solidify RT.

  7. Gerald McCoy is just a sophomore, Terrance Cody is just a FRESHMAN! Have you ever seen a college football game?

  8. In the first two rounds in 2006 and 2007, the Giants have drafted 3 DBs. I can’t see them doing it again. They need a LB who can cover backs out of the backfield, and with Burress gone they need a WR who defensive coordinators have to worry about – the ones they have don’t scare anyone. If they move Kiwanuka back to LB, I could see a DE. RB and TE are not really issues; the Giants have more depth than people think. Overall, because of the Giants’ depth, I expect Jerry Reese to draft the best player who falls to him within limits (ie no QB, no PK), but with three picks in the first two rounds I would be very surprised if the BPAs were never LB or WR. They haven’t drafted a LB in the first two rounds since 1991, and it shows. There are certainly enough LBs in this draft who merit consideration.

  9. hey guru, do you forget to put a James Laurinaties MLB of Ohio, in this mock sorry but he’s the best LB coming of college behind Ray Malauaga.

  10. Lions Fan ugg Says:

Lions will move Jeff Backus to OG after drafting tackle at 1st spot. I would like to see them go OT, DE, DT.

  11. Interesting mock, i like it. Not any holes here in my opinion, assuming neither QB distinguishes himself.

Eagles: I could see TE then RB over an OL. I am sure Free Agency will keep 1 of the 2 OTs…and Gilles and Cole played well enough at OG to slide Andrews or Herremans out to OT. OL could go later in Rd 2 or 3…but we all know the eagles will trade down anyway, keep the streak alive!!

  12. one more point…I thought the skins going for a QB makes sense. I don’t think Campbell can take you deep enough and at this point time to move on. You are playing for SB, not Playoffs and he hasn’t proven he can take them to either.

  13. I believe that the patriots have the 22nd pick in the first round and the 54th in the second based on the Eagles advance in the playoffs

  14. Your list of the top 5 needs for the Lions doesn’t include a DT. This is a serious oversight whether the Lions stay in a 4-3 (where they don’t have a single pure 1-technique defensive tackle), or if they switch to a 3-4 (as suggested by head coaching candidate Todd Bowles) for where they don’t have anyone with a hope of playing nose tackle.

That said I think picking a OT, OG in round 1 is interesting though – and I think would get the Lions farther along in one year then anything else. They’ve got a stud running back and a few QBs on the roster that are good enough to compete for an NFL job – but no Lions QB has been given the chance to stand tall and throw behind a line that’s also ready to give their running back a clear path to the light of day. If this draft were to hold up, you’d expect that the Lions would line up 4 first round picks and a 2nd round pick on the line – Michael Oher, Jeff Backus, Dominic Raiola, Duke Robinson, and Gosder Cherilus. That’s clearly an imposing right side and that matches with a left side that will be much tougher and more athletic. Raiola may be a bit small in the middle, but he’s smart, athletic and tough – making him perfect if the Lions keep a zone-blocking or combination zone/power scheme.

  15. No offence, but you really need to check your sources cuz this is a pritty bad mock draft. Now a like some of your picks, but most of those are picks are ones ive seen on other mock drafts. I think the front of your draft is ludacris. Idk if yur tryin to stur up conversation with this mock draft, but i think its just raising eye brows… and not in a good way

  16. squigg510 Says:

wow great mock..coming from a die hard lions fan (yeah i know thats hard even for me to admit) i love the fact u have them getting a OT with 1st pick..but im still not sure what OT its gonna be..how ever,i DONT see them getting another O-Linemen at the 20th pick unless Michael Oher,Eugene Monroe,Andre Smith,or Jason Smith slip that far..i like that kid Duke Robinson hes big and can play but i think him at 20 is a bit high unless he has a BEAST COMBINE..
honestly i would like to trade down to maybe the raiders pick and get one of the top 4 OT’s or maybe LB CURRY(if only i was gm lol)..ok im kinda rambaling..ill repost after the combine because i know my opinion will change lol..great mock tho keep it updated 😉

  17. Great mock draft, but in needs of the teams i saw that you don’t put CB in the needs of the Miami Dolphins.

  18. ok im a huge bills fan…. i kno i kno…. choke choke choke… anyways i just dont see them taking a QB in the first round… jauron loves edwards as does most of the coaching staff and players…. with so many other needs that have to be filled i think the only value pick at that spot is if Crabtree falls to them…. i coule see curry, brown, or monroe being the pick at this spot…. what i really wanna see is buffalo actually making a trade sending Peters and picking up a tackle in his spot… hes obviously not that happy in Buffalo so y not avoid a potential distraction further down the road… maybe land two first round picks so one of them can be a little bit of a reach… i unno… just being a bills fan…. i kno ANYTHING can happen… usually not for the best though

  19. You got Brandon SPikes at #23….Didn’t he say he was staying in College for another year?

  20. Sanchez has become quite the “sexy” pick now…what you say about Hill not being a franchise QB is true. I agree Singletary will take a QB in this draft…but I’d be surprised if it was in the 1st round. He wants a power running team…so to get that he needs 1) stud RT; 2) power RB to augment Gore; 3) QB. So, he may pick the best OT on the board, or the best pass rusher, another of his priorities. Both Sanchez and Stafford would be great additions…but, after getting burned with Alex Smith, he and GM McCloughan may be reluctant to take another QB in the 1st round.

  21. FINALLY SOMEONE GIVES THE SAINTS A NEEDED PLAYER.TRIED OF SEEING lLB’S.WE HAVE A DEAL WORKED W/VILMA THEY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL FREE AGENICES START TO SIGN HIM,IF THEY SIGN BEFORE THEY LOSE THERE 1ST.RD PICK..
